Filmmaker Rick Madsen follows around Modest Mouse as they finish up Lonesome Crowded West, stopping off to interview a half dozen post-grunge Seattle icons like Elliott Smith and Doug Martsch of Built to Spill. A super-intimate look at the nascent band that gave me warm tinglies all over.
I saw them in 1997 or so in Austin, Texas and then in Phoenix, Arizona a few days later. Too cool for school for sure. In Phoenix, the big deal was that someone had busted out the window on the front of the camper top on their black van and they were trying to find something to cover it… and then, during the encore, a stage diver accidentally kicked over a backpack on stage and tons and tons of pills spilled out. Haven’t heard their very recent stuff… but damn if it’s not some of the best music.

One of my favorite bands. Saw them a couple summers ago. Singer had just done time for meth possession, or so I’d heard. He came out on stage and said, “I found some butterfly wings.” We all thought it was the meth talking until the encore, when he came out wearing a pair of costume wings he’d found backstage. Poor guy. Anyway, it’s Lonesome Crowded West and their new album freaking rules. Thanks for this video, though.
